BAL expert heads TTA Committee

Dave Rowley, training manager for Building Adhesives Limited, has become Chair of The Tile Association’s Supply Chain Training Committee. This committee is responsible for working with various external organisations, such as the Association for Ceramic Training and Development, on matters relating to training for the supply chain. Dave replaces Ian Kershaw, who has stepped down to concentrate on his role as overall TTA Chairman.

Dave Rowley has long TTA experience that includes unbroken service on this committee since its inception, more than a decade ago. His other longstanding role within the TTA Training Committee will continue unchanged.

He said, “This is an exciting time for the TTA in general and the Supply Chain Committee in particular. Our focus has always been on improving standards at every step of the product journey from manufacturer to end user. We have reached a significant milestone during 2014, with tile retailing’s first purpose-designed formal qualification now going through its pilot stage.”

The NVQ Level 2 Tile Retail Diploma combines relevant aspects of existing general retail qualifications with tiling-specific modules. Four of the six mandatory units relate directly to tiles and the ceramic industry, so that the Diploma will be evidence of both retailing skills and specialist technical knowledge of tiles and tiling. A Diploma holder will be able to establish customer needs and provide advice on tiling products, including measuring and planning for tiling and the fixing and care of tiles.

Distributors and stockists will gain a benchmark for personnel development and recruitment, while individual staff will be able to work towards a relevant formal qualification for the first time.

Dave Rowley said, “Formal qualifications have vital roles to play in ensuring service quality and reinforcing staff morale. An individual will inevitably feel more valued by an employer that offers help with career development.”

As BAL’s training manager, Dave Rowley has unmatched knowledge and experience of tiler training. He has been a key contributor in the development of many courses and seminars and has personally trained several thousand fixers. He is closely involved in the development of BAL courses, including the new Tile Retail training aimed at helping staff to achieve the NVQ Diploma.
