CCF brings modern flooring solution to the historic Imperial War Museum

When London’s Imperial War Museum (IWM) planned its £35 million refurbishment transformation in commemoration of the centenary of the First World War, the museum turned to Mapei, Polished Concrete Designs and CCF – a leading interior building products distributor – to provide a sound flooring solution fit for the prestigious building.

CCF worked alongside the manufacturer and installer during the major redevelopment project to provide a flooring system that could accommodate the heavy traffic of visitors’ footfall. Additionally, the flooring solution needed to have a high-quality finish whilst also being quick and efficient to install, to ensure that the exhibition could be opened as soon as possible.

Following discussions with IWM, Mapei’s high performance cementitious flooring system, Ultratop, was chosen. The product not only protects the 5,000m2 floor area in the museum against damage due to its anthracite-toned abrasion-resistant surface, but also offers a variety of aesthetic effects on the surface. This was the perfect solution to providing a durable and long-lasting flooring solution that also matched the aesthetics of the exhibition seamlessly.

To ensure a quick turnaround of the project, CCF also supplied Mapei Topcem rapid-drying screed – a product that hardens within 24 hours and dries in approximately four days. Additionally, Mapei Primer SN, a two-component epoxy pre-filled primer, was applied to both existing and new substrates for a self-smoothing cementitious finish.

Matthew Farmer, Sales Director for the Flooring Division of CCF, said: “It was an honour to work with the museum, Mapei and Polished Concrete Designs to achieve its exacting requirements for this major project. We are very proud and pleased with the result, which was achieved through a combination of expertise from the CCF Flooring Team and quality manufacturer Mapei to make it possible.”

The transformed IWM now houses additional First World War Galleries, a reconfigured atrium, redeveloped event spaces and improved retail outlets and café. As part of the centenary celebration, the IWM featured an exhibition entitled Truth and Memory – the largest exhibition of British First World War art for almost 100 years.
