Tonnes of reasons to recycle with Recofloor

As part of its Fifth Birthday celebrations, Recofloor has announced the Contractor and Distributor that have each collected the most waste vinyl flooring since the scheme’s inception in September 2009 by Altro and Polyflor.

Recofloor is the UK’s award-winning national vinyl flooring recycling scheme and over the past five years has contributed to increasingly large volumes of vinyl flooring being diverted from landfill; to date, well over 1,850 tonnes.

Smooth offcuts and safety off-cuts are recycled back into new Polyflor and Altro flooring, with smooth uplifted vinyl recycled into other products, such as road traffic cones.

Topping their respective ‘leagues’ are Hull Flooring with 91 tonnes over five years and Nutland Carpets, Chandlers Ford, which has collected 51 tonnes. The accolades further recognise the considerable achievements of the companies, both of which are previous and current Recofloor Awards holders.

Success for Hull Flooring, a CFA member, has mainly been achieved through working on a number of retail projects for its clients since joining the scheme. Working to tight turnaround times with advance planning from the Recofloor team allows them to carry out installations at retail sites to a professional standard and in an efficient manner.

This, in conjunction with day-to-day material collected at their Hull offices, has enabled them to recycle in excess of 34 tonnes in 2011 – an impressive 11% of the total tonnages collected that year.

The key to success with retail contracts, according to the company, is close liaison to ensure waste material is picked up under timed collections as stores are still trading while work is being carried out.

For Sean Dawson, Managing Director of Hull Flooring, the 91 tonnes over five years is a major milestone and he’s delighted with their progress towards their recycling goals. He says: “It’s a positive for everybody! Being in the retail sector means speed is of the essence and we need to complete projects as efficiently as possible. Recofloor’s logistics are very good with direct collections from site. The majority of our tonnages are direct pick-up from site and Recofloor always rises to the challenge.

“From our perspective, participating in Recofloor does save money on disposal costs and where margins are being challenged further, this is an added benefit and an added string to our bow. This can make a difference with clients who choose us over someone else,” he adds.

In the 2014 Recofloor Awards Hull Flooring won the Construction Project of the Year for integrating Recofloor into its working practices at a number of retail projects. It was also a Gold Award winner in 2013 and won a Silver Award in 2014.

Encouraging greater use of their drop-off sites and efficient backhauling of material for collection by Recofloor are key factors in Nutland Carpets’ success. An IFDA member, the family-run business was a Recofloor Gold Award winner in 2013 and 2014, plus Distributor of the Year in 2013.

Director James Smith says: “We’re thrilled to have collected the most Distributor volume over five years. We are getting a lot more material dropped off at Chandlers Ford and we’re planning to build this up at Poole too where we keep the bins inside to protect the vinyl.

“We hand out Recofloor polythene bags to our customers who know there’s a convenient drop-off point for floor waste when they collect new supplies. Plus we promote Recofloor in our newsletter and price list, which does catch people’s attention. Some customers have called us and asked how they can take part, so the message is definitely getting through,” he adds.
