UZIN system used in Silverstone UTC project

UZIN systems were used for the flooring installations at Silverstone University Technical College, right in the heart of one of the world’s most famous motor racing circuits. The flooring contractor, CD Northern turned to UZIN because minimising risk was essential on such a prestigious project which involved installing several different types of floor coverings. UZIN’s range of solvent-free products also helped contribute towards a low emission flooring installation. This stunning new multi-million pound facility is a centre of excellence for pupils to study the specialist fields of High Performance Engineering and Technical Events Management.

Various floor coverings were installed using different UZIN systems. Parts of the ground floor were first repaired using UZIN RR 203 crack bridge mesh and UZIN NC 888 feather repair. The ground floor was then prepared using UZIN PE 360 primer and UZIN NC 160 smoothing compound. For the first and second floors UZIN PE 630 primer and UZIN NC175 fibre-reinforced smoothing compound were utilised.
2000 m² of safety flooring was then installed across several areas on the ground, first and second floors using UZIN KE 2000 S pressure sensitive adhesive. 2400 m² of carpet tiles were also installed using UZIN U2100 tackifier. Silverstone UTC opened in September 2013 and the new flooring was fitted remarkably, contributing to the vibrant and creative environment.
UZIN is one company focused on innovating new environmental solutions when installing floor coverings. A factor which needs to be considered when installing floors within sensitive environments such as hospitals, schools and colleges. The company provides range of products which have EC1 Plus® certification to meet the highest requirements for occupational health and safety.

Sustainability and the environment is one of the most significant dilemmas facing the construction industry and consumers require products which do not pollute the air with odours and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the flooring industry this a particular concern because there is a growing demand for ecological products which help reduce emissions and diminish health risks. Legislations such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) aim to improve the safety of products and create a healthy work environment. LEED and BREEAM certification also puts pressure on companies to develop sustainable and eco-friendly buildings.

This has led many flooring manufacturers to develop solvent free products. However, solvent-free is not always equal to pollutant-free, many adhesives for example still contain various non-volatile organic materials, which gradually evaporate from the adhesive over a long time and make their way into the air we breathe. This does not occur with Blue Angel or EMICODE EC1 Plus® labelled adhesives products, which provide the highest possible protection against emissions and provide the utmost standards for room air quality in interior spaces. Flooring installation products labelled with the GEV sign EC1 Plus® and Blue Angel labels are solvent-free, very low emission and guarantee excellent indoor air quality as well as providing the most ecological approach for flooring installations.

UZIN continually looks to improve the ecological credentials of its products. UZIN KE 2000 S, for example, is labelled with the Blue Angel and EC 1 Plus® accolades meets the highest requirements for safety and environmental protection but also meets consumer demands in protecting a healthy indoor environment.
