Welsh bespoke carpet Dragons blaze proudly at the Mercure Cardiff

Complete with dragon heads and intertwined Celtic medallions, Lano Flooring Solutions has produced a gold and red bespoke carpet stretching across the 700m2 of the elegant ballroom for the Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel and Spa at the vibrant centre of Wales’ capital city.

Named the “Owain Glyndwr Suite”, in honour of the last native Prince of Wales, only a gloriously proud and strongly patriotic theme would do for the main banqueting suite at the Mercure, which is the largest hotel meeting and events space in Cardiff.

And so, following a historic and triumphant battle played out on the rugby pitch as Wales were crowned Six Nations Champions for the second year running, the Mercure Cardiff decided to pay fitting tribute

The brief given to LRW Interior Design was to ensure that anyone standing in the room would instantaneously know that they were in Cardiff, the capital of Wales.

With this bold brief, the layout of the large banqueting room complete with viewing platform presented certain challenges that meant that the carpet design took on a central importance within the scheme.

Simon Scott, Director of LRW Interior Design explains:

“By the nature of a big space like the ballroom, we were limited by the amount of wall area on which we could impart the design. So our biggest canvas for this purpose was the floor.

The idea was to create a striking carpet, but also to use it a backdrop for the whole room.”

The design team at Lano Flooring Solutions rose to the challenge by creating a highly striking red and gold design, incorporating the national symbol of Wales, a striking trio of dragons wound within a tessellating medallion bound together with traditional Celtic patterns. Laid over a wide area and viewed from above, the stunning result imparts a warm, welcoming feel and regal ambience to the room that is used for weddings, functions and conferences.

Highly impressed with service from Lano Flooring Solutions, Simon Scott continues; “Lano is a delight to work with, and its design ability is exceptional. The team carried out all the work on the pattern and kept on coming up with options and scales until we had the design laid down”.

In a hardy ten-row woven axminster construction, the heavy weight of the 1460gm/m2 carpet will ensure that the proud and striking Welsh design will continue to grace the suite with its elegant appearance for years to come.  Importantly, the carpet is straightforward to maintain for the hotel staff and can withstand the intensive usage and footfall of the busy event suite.

Simon Scott concludes; “We hope guests and event attendees will look at what they are standing on and be intrigued by the design and the message woven into the pattern.”
